SOYLEIC trials in Champaign, IL (Photo provided by Illinois Soybean Association)

To help Illinois soybean farmers capitalize on market opportunities for high oleic, low linolenic (HOLL) soybean oil, this project continues the breeding efforts to select and license varieties that combine competitive yields with the value-added SOYLEIC™ trait. The team has a full breeding pipeline and intends to release two to four new varieties each year.

Read the latest project update below provided by Dr. Eliana Monteverde.

“In October, we finished harvesting all our HOLL trials in all locations. Several of our varieties had higher yields than the Pioneer Plenish checks and similar yields to the commercial checks, across MG II-IV: 2 varieties belonging to MGII, 7 varieties belonging to MGIII, and 1 variety in MG IV. We developed competitive varieties that will be planted in 2025 for seed increases and future commercialization.

Over the winter we will finish analyzing all our data from the USDA Uniform Trials. We will also make crosses in the greenhouse and send F1 seed to Puerto Rico for generation advance. In March, we will start planning our 2025 trials.”
