Logan Miller, Research Specialist at University of Illinois, is working with Dr. Aaron Hager on Illinois Soybean Association-funded research to determine injury potential to very early planted soybeans from various soil-residual herbicides/active ingredients. Logan recently provided an update on the research progress:
This spring, the early soybean portion of the project was planted and PREs (pre-emergence) were applied on April 15 and the soybeans emerged April 29. The conventional planted timing soybean was established on May 19 and emerged on May 27. A blanket POST application of Roundup + Liberty was applied to the early soybeans on May 30 (2-3″ weeds) to maintain weed free plots. Crop injury ratings, stand counts, and soybean height in the early and conventional planted timing soybean have been conducted and are still ongoing.
Observations from this spring showed different products with the same active ingredient(s) varied in crop injury. I look forward to seeing the influence of different treatments on yield, if any, and what next year brings. Cooler, wetter weather occurred overall during the time of the conventional planted timing soybean, which is typically not the case.
