Crop Report

Attending the Illinois Wheat Plot Tour provided valuable insights into wheat development and the progress of corn and soybean planting in Bond and Madison Counties. Overall, wheat is flowering and progressing well, with insignificant occurrences of lodging and disease. Wheat yields are estimated at 93.77 in Bond County and 75.15 in Madison County based on our head and spikelet counts. Wet conditions have had discernible impacts on corn and soybean planting progress as most fields appear to be untouched by farming equipment.
Mid 70s and windy. Lodging was noted in small sections of fields and varied across the counties.
Rains from the previous night left fields ranging from tacky to saturated. Minor ponding was observed in many fields in the area as they struggle to absorb the frequent rainfall this area has been experiencing.
Our team of seven conducted head and spikelet counts across three fields in Bond and Madison Counties. To collect head counts, we placed a yardstick alongside a representative row and counted all the heads within that 3-foot strip. For spikelet counts, we took the average of 20 heads from the same 3-foot section. We also noted the row spacing in each field. Using our data, yield averages were estimated by the Illinois Wheat Association for each county.
Flowering – beginning grain fill (10.5-11.1 Feekes)
No pest presence or feeding was observed.
Leaf rust was observed in one field in Bond County. Scab was identified in one field in Madison County. Although these two diseases were noted, presence was extremely low.
