In this presentation, Dr. Rachel Vann, associate professor of crop sciences at the University of Illinois, addresses management challenges that arise late in the soybean growing season and how they affect harvest efficiency, yield, and grain quality.

The presentation covers common fourth quarter issues such as green stem syndrome, uneven maturity, and weather-related risks including heat, humidity, frost, and storms. Soybean desiccation is examined as a management tool, with discussion on product selection, application timing, and environmental conditions that influence performance. Results from a coordinated multi state desiccation study are used to evaluate the effects of planting date, maturity group, and desiccant timing on soybean yield and harvest timing. Illinois specific results and regional trends are highlighted, along with considerations for harvest aids and their impact on seed quality, protein, and oil content.
