New experiences paved the way for new growth. That’s how I would summarize my experience with the Illinois Soybean Association mentorship program. I was given the opportunity to join this group and take in each mentorship visit.

I had no general agriculture background when the program started at Beck’s Hybrids with David Ringger. However, as I left the PACE facility with Julie Rada’s team, I felt more confident in understanding the different pieces of infrastructure involved in agriculture.

It was a great six-week period, and each visit offered insight into a different perspective and set of responsibilities in agriculture. For me, the day spent with Dan Sahm at Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) stood out. His general demeanor was wonderful and proactive—he embodied what someone can do to help their community. As he described what his department at the USDA does, he shared memorable experiences he’s had completing projects—more specifically, his positive experiences with local farmers achieving goals that benefit both the farm and the conservation of the land involved.

I was inspired during that trip to rethink how I can help others through land conservation practices and to utilize the resources NRCS has to offer.

Still, each visit gave me new perspectives through new experiences in the world of agriculture. I encourage anyone who wants to learn and listen to those directly involved in agriculture to sign up for the mentorship.

It’s been exciting and fun to grow in this industry through this educational program.
