Caption: Disease pressure is tough right now. A premium fungicide was applied 30 days ago. Corn is dented, and the grower plans to ride it out.
Caption: This corn had 45 GPA 32% UAN applied with streamers bars at V5. No N loss here and pretty decent weed control.
Caption: Met Dr. John Jones last night. He’s our new U of I Nutrient Extension Specialist. Great info at NLID Plot field day.
SYNOPSIS

It feels very fall-like with low humidity and temperatures in the low 80s. The crop is proceeding well, and some corn and soybean harvest will begin next week, mainly March corn and late group 2 soybeans.

Mildly Dry (soil is drier than normal, plant growth may have slowed)

Really great outlook for the next two weeks. Very little precip in the forecast. Later crops are struggling in places.

PRECIPITATION

Spotty rain last 3 weeks. The lucky ones got 1 inch plus.

FIELD/SOIL CONDITIONS

Variable with rain events

FIELD ACTIVITIES

Desiccation on some soybeans. Waiting for harvest to begin.

SOYBEAN GROWTH STAGE

R1 to 40% leaf drop.

CORN GROWTH STAGE

Pollination to black layer.

WEEDS

Waterhemp, giant ragweed and vines are starting to break really bad in places.

DISEASES

Full gamut in most areas—SDS and BSR in soybeans. Physoderma brown spot and southern rust in corn.

OTHER

Learned last night at IL FB Nutrient Stewardship Field Day that Wayne and White counties have a combined 39K acres of prevent plant. Jasper, Richland, Crawford, and Cumberland counties all have a lot of bare ground.
