After returning from Vacation, it is always interesting to see how the crop has changed. This year, I was happy to see green crops, unlike some years. The crop is moving along nicely and a few soybean fields are starting to change to a light yellow color!
Another hot and humid week in the books for East Central IL! Next week looks a whole lot better!
In the last two weeks we have received 2.7″ of rain. .6 of that fell on Tuesday night after a very hot and humid day -A saving grace.
We slowly keep the soil generated with a little moisture. Although it is still fairly dry, the rain fall helps keep this crop moving in the right direction.
R4-R6 depending on your soybean maturity. The early planted, early RM soybeans are starting to change color. Pod fill is in full swing. I’ve seen 2,3 and 4 soybean pods.
The milk like is moving slowly down the kernels. If we can get into some lower temperatures next week we can slow this process down and help with startch development in the kernel.
Overall populations of insects continue to stay low. I’ve seen some ladybugs, stink bugs, beanleaf beetles and wollybear Caterpillars.
Soybeans- SDS and White Mold. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do at this point for these diseases.
Corn- Anthracnose top die back. Individual plants as well as larger areas. Crown Rot is also showing up after we started to see Ghosted plants.
I still see a lot of opportunities for this crop. Yield estimates have been made by elevators and the tour. What these do not take into account are the drowned out areas. Locations have had not enough rain and too much rain. There will be a lot of variability as you cross fields. I hope for a large crop because of the markets! Let’s hope mother nature continues to take care of our crop.
