SYNOPSIS

Million dollar rain, corn tassels, soybean blooms, Japanese beetles and more!

WEATHER

Hot and humid as everyone knows. The heat and humidity has really pushed our corn crop along.

PRECIPITATION

On July 4th, southern Champaign County received some relief and received .5-2″ of rain.
On July 10, Hurricane Beryl brought significant amounts of rain to help out northern Champaign County.
In Flatville we received 3.8″ of rain. Other areas 5+”.
On July 11, we received another .5″ of rain.
In total, amounts ended up from 4-7″ of rain.

FIELD/SOIL CONDITIONS

Even though the replanted replant is drowned out again, with Hurricane Beryl’s significant amount of rain, it could not have come at a better time. Corn is headed into tassel and pollination and soybeans will start pod fill.

SOYBEAN GROWTH STAGE

R1-R2. The rains we received will give soybeans more growth and send them back into vegetative stages.
R2 (full flower) is a good time to make a fungicide/ insects application!

CORN GROWTH STAGE

Corn is all over the board, but growing at a very fast pace. In the next week to 10 days, most corn will be tasseling if it has not already.

INSECTS

Japanese beetles seem to be the only insects present in higher numbers, but they have not been out of control.
Overall, insect pressure is low so far.

WEEDS

After the rains, I expect to see the tops of waterhemp plants pop through the soybeans canopy. Weeds that were not killed by post-applications will have regrowth. Scout your fields to ensure you have good control.

DISEASES

I have not seen any significant signs of diseases so far. The hurricane rains may have brought potential spores with it. Scout your fields weekly and watch for incoming diseases.
Tar spot, Grey leaf spot and southern rust are all possible.
Brown silk is a good time for make a fungicide application in corn fields.
