SHELBY WECKEL UPDATES

Region 5 | April 26, 2024 | Champaign

Caption: Frost on the grass on 4/25.
SYNOPSIS

Pockets of activity SW & NW of Champaign, as well as scattered in other areas. We missed the rain on 4/19 and that pushed growers to head to the field. Mainly soybean planting, but there has been some corn planted as well. Cooler Temps and a cold rain, will take its toll on corn emergence. Soybeans that were up, seemed to survive the light frost we had on 4/25. A warm up is on the way, and once the rain had moved out, this looks like a great opportunity to get rolling.

WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING BEST DESCRIBES CURRENT CONDITIONS IN THIS COUNTY?
Moderately Wet (soil is damp, standing water may be present in low areas, water bodies are full)
WEATHER

70°->30°->70° in 5 days. We started out the week warm. And trended down with the temperaturs with a cold rain on 4/23. Temperatures are on the raise and look to stay that way with rain in the forecast.

PRECIPITATION

4/23- .4-1″
4/26- predicting half inch or more.

FIELD/SOIL CONDITIONS

The healthy henbit crop we all had, is maturing and dying if it has not been sprayed. These are perfect locations for black cutworm moths to lay eggs. We will see how bad cutting is later in May. Soil that was worked prior to the rains, seemed to work up fairly good, if it was fit. We did not have much of a freeze thaw cycle this winter, so it is nice to see the soil working up well.

SOYBEAN GROWTH STAGE

Very early planted soybeans are just emerging.

CORN GROWTH STAGE

Very early corn is just spiking through.

INSECTS

Black cutworm moth flights.
Reports of armyworms in the area.
Since we did not have a very cold winter, keep your eyes out for early emerging bean leaf beetles.

WEEDS

Beautiful cover of henbit is maturing if it has not been sprayed.
Yellow rocket is appearing as well.
