Caption: Earlier in the week the main topic was wildfire smoke. Luckily it has subsided now. Some concern about how it may have affected yields, but with low moisture up to this point it may be hard to isolate exact causes.
Caption: Rows have not closed in 30 inch beans. The next week will be interesting as far as weed emergence with the rains in the area. Most herbicides are off label at this point. Some herbicides can cause crop injury when used off label – hopefully people adhere to labels. Fields have been clean up until this point due to the dry conditions in the weed germination zone.

SYNOPSIS

This week started with drought and wildfire smoke and ended with ponds in the field. Southern Woodford County had 2.5 inches of rain over two separate storms a few hours apart. The first storm was in the overnight hours and had small hail. The second storm was an intense downpour. We were lucky to not have damage to the crop in this area. Next week will be focused on which weeds are germinating and what we can do about it. The herbicide options are limited and may or may not control the weeds emerging. Cultivation is an option in organic or later planted beans that are not close to the rows closing. Read the herbicide label for crop growth height and stage restrictions.

2.5 inches in southern Woodford County. Areas of LaSalle County had 0.1 to 1 inch. Areas of Kentucky had 3-4 inches of rain. More rain chances today through the weekend.
