SYNOPSIS

Harvest has kicked off in most of the region. As I have traveled northern Illinois and Eastern Iowa, I have seen some really nice fields as well as some that were stressed. Northern Illinois looked really nice. Some fields were heavily impacted by Tar Spot. That is the main disease I consistently found. Other diseases that I often found but in lesser degrees were Northern Corn Leaf Blight, Southern Rust and Anthracnose Stalk Rot. Many of the soybeans are turning and it is obvious there is a lack of water in most of the region as it is not a uniform appearance.

WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING BEST DESCRIBES CURRENT CONDITIONS IN THIS COUNTY?
Moderately Dry (soil is dry, plants may be browning or stressed, water bodies are low)
IF CONDITIONS ARE ON THE DRY END, WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING US DROUGHT MONITOR CATEGORIES BEST FIT CURRENT CONDITIONS
Moderate Drought (D1)
WEATHER

Hot week has continually stressed the crop and will likely hurt seed fill.

FIELD ACTIVITIES

Very dry in all locations I visited.

DISEASES

Take time if you haven’t already to assess stalk quality. Some of the heavier stressed fields may have significant stalk quality issues and could greatly impact harvest if a wind event were to happen. Consider moving any of those fields higher on your harvest priority list.

ABIOTIC ISSUES

Something interesting I found in our breeding trials was a couple of hybrids that had anthocyanin overproduced. Likely due to some stressors at those specific locations. Not a widespread issue, but interesting to see.

OTHER

Harvest has started. Be careful working with and around machinery. Make eye contact with operators to know they know you are there. Get good rest, eat well and take care of each other.
