SYNOPSIS

Corn and soybean planting in northern LaSalle county both seem to be 60-70% completed with some producers having all their soybeans planted and are now focused on the corn. I’m expecting to see most producers in the area to wrap up planting most of the 2025 crop in the next 2 weeks- maybe less.

WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING BEST DESCRIBES CURRENT CONDITIONS IN THIS COUNTY?
Near Normal
WEATHER

Temperatures in the mid 70s to 80s are in the 10 day forecast. Windy days have hampered some spraying operations and created some dusty conditions.

PRECIPITATION

No significant precipitation in the 10 day forecast at this point.

FIELD/SOIL CONDITIONS

Dry/dusty surface conditions exist in spring tilled fields. Adequate subsurface moisture is present for planting. Slight surface crusts have formed over the furrow in fields that received rain shortly after planting. This seems to have slowed emergence in some cases but is not enough to reduced stands significantly.

FIELD ACTIVITIES

Planting is the main event at this point. Worked ground or no-till, it’s all going in now. With no real good chances of rain in the forecast there is some concern among producers about getting soil residual herbicides activated in freshly treated fields.

SOYBEAN GROWTH STAGE

VE-Early VC where they have emerged. Cotyledons are above the surface and unifoliate leaves are beginning to open. Most planted fields have yet to break the surface.

CORN GROWTH STAGE

VE-V1 on first planted acres. We should be able to row many more from the road in the next 7-10 days.

WHEAT GROWTH STAGE

N/A

INSECTS

Occasionally finding white grubs in the furrow when digging seed. Have not seen any significant corresponding above ground symptoms of damage.

WEEDS

velvetleaf, lambsquarters, giant ragweed, cocklebur. Pressures are pretty minimal- soil residual herbicides are doing a good job so far.

DISEASES

No significant pressures observed at this time.

ABIOTIC ISSUES

None observed at this time.

COVER CROP INSIGHTS

I’ve seen more cover crop acres being planted green or being terminated immediately before planting. My area has had adequate moisture this spring to allow for that. Soil conditions in long-term cover crop fields are very mellow. Soybeans being planted into cereal rye should experience excellent conditions to get them started.
