SUMMARY:Webinar: Trash or Treasure? Maximize the Value of Your Residue
DESCRIPTION:Whether you no-till\, cover crop\, double crop\, or simply have higher yields today than a decade ago\, you’ve got residue in your field. Sometimes we call that residue “trash” because it can create challenges coming planting time. However\, we cannot discredit the nutritional value that residue contains to help feed next year’s crop and sustain a healthy soil\, and suddenly is that “trash” actually “treasure?” The hard part about treasure is that it usually is tough to get to\, as can be residue management of our cropping systems. In this webinar\, Dr. Connor Sible and Ava Isaacs will review exactly what residue is\, how much we’re likely to encounter year over year\, and summarize recent trial work on residue management conducted by the Crop Physiology Lab at the University of Illinois.  \nRegister Here!\n Presenters:  \nDr. Connor Sible is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois\, where he also earned his MS and PhD degrees. His research focuses on corn and soybean production systems\, with an emphasis on optimizing the interaction between agronomic products and management practices to improve grain yield and nutrient use efficiency. His work includes evaluating biological and biostimulant products\, fertilizer strategies\, and crop residue management to enhance soil nutrient availability. He regularly presents his research at field days\, extension meetings\, national trade shows\, and international conferences.  \n Ava Isaacs is a master’s student in the Crop Physiology Lab at the University of Illinois. Her research focuses on agricultural biologicals and nutrient use efficiency\, with particular emphasis on how biological products vary in efficacy across environments and regions\, as well as how their performance changes under different management systems and across hybrid or variety genetics. Her work centers on improving fertilizer use efficiency and evaluating the impacts of biologicals on soil and plant health. The goal of her research is to help farmers better understand this emerging product market as they make input decisions to maximize yield and field productivity.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Cover Crops and Soil Health for Better Crop Fertility Decisions
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, January 21 at 11:00 AM CT \nCover crops and soil health continue to be key management considerations on many farms. This webinar will feature Dr. Andrew Margenot and Heidi Allen Asensio discussing how cover crops influence nutrient management and soil function. John Pike will also join to provide a field-level perspective.    \n The program will begin with a look at non-cereal rye cover crop options\, including nitrogen-fixing species and what research shows about their role in supplying nitrogen. Presenters will also address how cover crops can affect fertilizer needs\, nutrient availability and soil moisture across tillage systems. The soil health segment will focus on practical soil testing tools\, how organic matter contributes nutrients\, and an overview of biological products and mycorrhizal fungi\, including potential benefits and ways to evaluate them in the field.  \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Understanding Inconsistent Performance of Glufosinate for Waterhemp Control
DESCRIPTION:Illinois farmers know that waterhemp is not easy to control\, especially as resistance grows. In this webinar\, Dr. Patrick Tranel will highlight Illinois Soybean Checkoff-funded research aimed at improving how glufosinate is used\, including when and how to apply it for the best results. Attendees will also hear an update on the status of herbicide resistance in waterhemp\, and what research is being done to help farmers identify resistance problems sooner and preserve effective herbicide options for the future.  \n\nRegister Here!\n\n Presenter:  \n Dr. Patrick Tranel is the Ainsworth Professor and associate head in the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois. Tranel joined the university in the late 1990s and has been teaching undergraduate and graduate students about weed science both on campus and more recently through the online Master of Science program. As weeds have evolved over the years\, so has the research Tranel conducts. He uses molecular and genomic approaches to better understand how weeds evolve to the various tools farmers use to control them.  \n A native of Galena\, Illinois\, Tranel earned his bachelor’s degree in agronomy from Iowa State University\, master’s in weed science from Washington State University and doctorate in botany from Michigan State University.

SUMMARY:Soil Health Sounds Great—But Is It Paying Yet?
DESCRIPTION:Adopting cover crops and no-till can improve soil health over time\, but what about the short-term returns? This webinar takes a look at two years of replicated trial results across Illinois to see how these conservation practices are performing.  \nLearn how no-till and cover cropping—used alone or together—stack up against chisel tillage with no cover crops when it comes to soybean yield and economics. Presenters will also share data from corn–soybean and corn–wheat/soybean rotations and discuss how soil health testing fits into the cost equation.  \nThis Field Advisor webinar will be held on Zoom on November 18\, 2025 at 11:00 AM CT. Click here to register. \nPresenters:  \nAndrew Margenot\, Ph.D.\, is a soil scientist and associate professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He joined the Illinois agricultural community in 2017 and leads a research team of more than 40 members that evaluates nutrient biogeochemistry in Illinois and the greater North Central U.S. region. Margenot’s research focuses on phosphorus management\, soil health and carbon crediting\, with the goal of supporting efficient nutrient use for crop productivity that also supports environmental quality.  \nHeidi Allen Asensio is a doctoral student in the Department of Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She joined Margenot’s lab in 2021. Her research seeks to establish and integrate benchmarks of soybean sustainability in Illinois using soil health\, water quality and climate-smart metrics. Allen Asensio is passionate about working collaboratively with farmers\, understanding local agricultural practices and ultimately generating knowledge to inform decision-making.
